Theatre@First is an all-volunteer community theatre based in Somerville, MA. Founded in 2003, we fill a vital niche in the vibrant Davis Square arts scene. We draw upon the talents and support of individuals and organizations throughout the community to provide opportunities for our participants and audiences to experience quality live theatre in a variety of local venues.

Auditions
None Escape - The Island of Doctor Moreau
None Escape is an adaptation of The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells set in a trauma support group in the present day. The story follows Prentiss, who tells the support group her story of being shipwrecked on a mysterious island inhabited by Moreau, a scientist conducting disturbing experiments in vivisection, transforming animals into human-like creatures. As Prentiss tells her story, the space and actors around her become the set, the props, and the characters. The transformation of actors into Beast Folk is accomplished with movement and drugstore makeup. Ultimately, the play ends on a note of optimism as the Beasts transform back into human characters, then back into actors, and the audience and cast come together as one.

Calling all local playwrights: we want your short plays!
Festival@First 13: Superstitious
Festival@First 13: Superstitious will collect 8-10 original short plays, and will explore the weird, the wacky, and the sometimes spooky world of superstition.
Superstition is a widely held belief, typically not based on reason or science, that future events can be influenced by one's behavior in some supernatural way. What could go wrong when you mess with these beliefs, passed down through generations, shared across continents, and perpetuated in popular culture?
Say “Bloody Mary” three times? Break a mirror? Walk under a ladder? What could happen?! The outcome is up to you, but we hope it will be hilarious, uncanny, and maybe a little twisted. We’re looking for each playwright’s take on the theme of superstition, which must be the focal point of each submitted play.

The mission of Theatre@First is to work together to provide a fun, friendly, and creative theatre experience for cast, crew, and audience alike. We welcome volunteers at all levels, without regard to race, color, religion, ethnicity, ancestry, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, gender expression, national origin, body type, age or disability. We encourage a supportive environment in which to work, play, grow, and explore new areas of the theatre arts.
